Aachen Information
Aachen is a town situated in a virtual valley, surrounded by hills and woods. It is famous for its extensive green areas - for example in the Ardennes and the Eifel. The town is a real pleasure for the pedestrian as the heart of the city is close to many sights and attractions like the Cathedral, the Theatre, the Elisa Fountain, the Casino and the Town Hall.
It is easy to relax in one of the historical gourmet restaurants, the café terraces on the Market Place or in student pubs of the student area. Having a long and interesting history lasting until the 1st century, when Celts and Romans inhabited the town, Aachen is also renowned for its hot water springs with their high level of minerals and trace elements. Guests from all over the world enjoy the new restored spa and baths (more than thirty) in the Carolus Baths of the Aachen Spa. Known for the yearly "Karlspreis", the worlds biggest equestrian tournament CHIO and the Cathedral of Charlemagne, Aachen maintains an incomparable flair of a city merging the past as well as the present in a charming way.
But Aachen has not only many historical sights, it is also interesting for young people as many students from all over the world are attending the Rhineland-Westphalia Technical University (RWTH). Furthermore, Aachen has the most pubs per number of inhabitants of all towns in Germany which leads to a very youthful atmosphere for example on the Market Place in the summer where people of all ages meet to have a drink, just chat or simply enjoy their get together.
The RWTH is of great importance for the town as its network of institutes of research and development has grown through the years maintaining close links with industry and commerce and offering new jobs.
